The species composition and spatial distribution of macrofaunal assemblages in intertidal sands of Arcachon Bay, on the southwestern Atlantic coast of France, were investigated through a quantitative sampling of twenty stations representative of the various sandy habitats found in the bay, excluding the exposed beaches. Sampling was done on a single occasion, during the winter of 1988. A total of 150 macrobenthic species (> 1 mm) were collected. The abundance of macrofauna ranged from 89 to 52000 ind.m-2 (with a high dominance of the gastropod Hydrobia ulvae in some sites) and the biomass ranged from 1.3 to 42.5 g.m-2 dry weight. Thirteen additional species (belonging to temporary meiofauna and small macrofauna) were also sampled in the sieving fraction... |

This study deals with the evolution of a fine sand benthic community located in shallow water off Arcachon Bay in an area which receives effluent from domestic and industrial sources. Comparison between 1974 and 1979 samplings shows trophic structure fluctuations. In 1979, the community is characterized by a dominance of deposit feeders with a decrease of suspension-feeders and carnivores. An effects of the sewage is not proved. The sedimentation of fine elements is proposed to explain the changes of trophic structure. It is suggested that these fluctuations are governed either by water movements or by long period sedimentary cycles. |

Densities of the suspension-feeding bivalve Cerastoderma edule (L.) were manipulated inside field enclosures at two tidal elevations (low water level, LWL, and mid-tide level, MTL) on an intertidal sand flat in Arcachon Bay to test the influence of both adult densities and emersion time on (1) individual growth rate, (2) settlement rate, and (3) survival rate of cockles. These experiments were conducted during two consecutive years, in plots with ambient (Ix) and modified (1/3x, 3x, or 10x) densities of adult cockles. Growth rate and condition index of both adults and juveniles were significantly higher at the lowest tidal elevation (LWL), which is in accordance with the feeding mode of the species. The highest juvenile growth rate was recorded in the... |

The distribution area of the nassariid gastropod Cyclope neritea (L.) includes the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, as well as the Atlantic coasts of the southern Iberian Peninsula. The species has spread north to the eastern Bay of Biscay (Arcachon Bay in 1976, Marennes-Oleron area and Morbihan Gulf in 1983-84). This spread might be explained either by (1) a natural spread favoured by environmental changes (e.g. an increase of temperature) or (2) a sudden range expansion due to the introduction of individuals from distant native populations. Molecular genetic analyses based on mitochondrial markers suggest that the present C. neritea population in Arcachon Bay has been introduced, probably unintentionally with oyster transfers, from several source... |

This paper aims to establish a comprehensive Iist of exotic species introduced into Atlantic French waters over the last century as well as their origin, and the vectors involved in the process. At least 104 non indigenous species have been recorded in the Atlantic and Channel coastal wa ters. Among those species, only a few (Bonamia ostreae, Crepidula fornicata) have resulted in highly significant negative impacts and side-effects on the coastal activity. In contrast, the introduction of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas can be considered to be successful, sustaining a large industry counting more than 4,000 companies and 150,000 tons of yearly production. Over the last decade, French and European laws have strenghtened the controls over exotic... |

This study deals with the application of macrozoobenthos-based biotic indices (BI) within the frame of the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive. More precisely, this study aimed at assessing the performance of five recently developed methodologies (BI) for the assessment of ecological quality status (EcoQ) in two semi-enclosed, sheltered coastal ecosystems and in one transitional water body situated along the Western French coast, namely Marennes-Oleron Bay, Arcachon Bay, and the Seine Estuary. This study showed that these five indices rarely agreed with each other, describing very different pictures of the overall EcoQ of the three study sites. This work also clearly underlined the limitations of these approaches, notably the... |
